I made it to the house of Dona Eulalia. She is amazingly kind, and has a tremendous amount of experience. She has been the midwife to around 4,000 mamas and babies!
In 2004 I had the profound experience of living with Dona Eulalia for a few weeks. I am now a midwife in Brooklyn, about to enter my fifth year of practice. I think of her often. The dedication in my undergraduate thesis (written a few months after my time in Guatemala) reads: "To las comadronas who struggle everyday in the face of tremendous hardship to help and support the women of their communities.
